Tell us your bold boss story!:

My business creates hand-crafted marquee letters that people rent for events - weddings are our #1 draw, but people love them for Bar Mitzvahs, anniversaries, proms, and really any kind of party. I started based on the advice of another "girl boss," a great friend of mine who owns the original Doris Loves, which is in the UK. She told us what a hit the business was and that there are hardly any light-up letters available for rent in the USA. I decided to go for it, with a big initial investment of money, time and talent. I started by creating letters to order: we knew that LOVE letters would be popular, and our first commission was an engagement - MARRY ME - to be held on a private island on Cape Cod. We were so excited but so nervous to create our letters, string the LED lights, install the battery boxes, paint and finish them to perfection. But the proposal went off perfectly, we got great word of mouth, and our business had legs to keep moving. The bookings were coming in! It went from crafting a few letters to having, in one year, nearly 100 figures to rent with bookings coming in through 2020!

We're all about bold boss moments, tell us about one of yours!:

It would have been easy to sit back on the success of our marquee letters. However the desire to innovate and of course, invest more time and creativity in our business was too strong. We developed a totally fresh and innovative concept for our region, the Temporary Tattoo Station, again available for any event. We designed our own exclusive line of temporary tattoos (which, we have to say, look totally real!) and people can rent our station for the most casual to the most fancy event.

Eclectic couples love this option, as do people who want a fresh take on an interactive guest experience - a great alternative to the photobooth. The big risk paid off, as our Tattoo Station travels to events constantly and we are in the process of building a second because it's been such a great success! We learned that the investment was big but we should go with our gut - we know our market and knew this would be a success, even though no one else was doing it.

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for the Bold Boss Tribe?:

I'd say to really make connections with other women in their industry. Through social media networking opportunities, both online and in person, meeting other entrepreneurs who have similar interests and experiences has been critical for my own success. The input of other pros can be worth its weight in gold!
